Born in South Wales, lived in North Wales and resident now in the wonderful village of Thornborough, North Bucks, with young family.
An interest in things environmental, a sense of belonging and wonder of place were nurtured in me from a young age but only developed after largely unsuccessful early school years. with a developing wonder-lust and love for wild places, which still leads to hills, mountains and inaccessible coastal areas, both in Britain and to a limited extent and with decreased regularity, across the world.
These early experiences, linked with a late academic recovery and a early and natural interest in travel, informed an increasing knowledge and environmentalism (philosophy, environmental economics, a developing awareness of human impacts on natural systems) resulting in an environmental degree (Environmental Sciences at Plymouth) and a post graduate MSc (Delivering National Recycling Policy – Implications for Local Authorities) at Cranfield.
Early employment involved oil pollution analysis and monitoring, linked with early diving experiences, (opening up a new world of natural wonders) and work to develop recycling practice within a local authority. A sense of having an impact at this limited local level led to my current employment, which in turn has resulted in local recycling development and community-based consultation around environmental issues (Local Agenda 21). In time this work led to the creation of SAVE.
My current focus is on Carbon Management (focusing on the Council estate and making links toward early stewardship within the community).
I believe, with limited leadership, we must all accept responsibility for the way we live and develop an awareness of the effects our lifestyles have on the world we live in, and manage and mitigate these impacts as well as we are able.
My family lives a relatively low carbon lifestyle (i.e. not low enough), measure and monitor my/our ecological footprint, with transport and supermarkets my Achilles heel!
