Alan is currently the SAVE Chairman and has been an active member of the group since 2003. He has been involved in a number of voluntary roles during his 15 years in Aylesbury.
Unlike most of the SAVE Executive, his professional life has not focused on environmental issues but his personal life is centred upon living sustainably and practising what he preaches. At home the family recycles almost all waste including that which cannot be recycled locally, having found national outlets that make commercial use of many waste materials.
The family "wheelie bin" is often to be found empty by the refuse collectors. Conversely, the compost bin is overflowing. The house has a well insulated roof and low energy light bulbs throughout. All "white goods" are being replaced by A. rated appliances. No electrical goods are left on stand-by; only the fridge and freezer are left running overnight.
Alan places great importance on supporting ethical and environmentally focused businesses. The home internet service is provided GreenNet. The home phone and broadband is provided by The Phone Co-op. Household energy (elec. and gas) are provided by Good Energy.
Alan loves his bike and cycles regularly; for pleasure and fitness, and for local transport to work and shopping.
He feeds the birds all year round and is rewarded by visits to his kitchen from a blackbird.
Alan believes that there can be no more important issue for local and global society than that it learns to live sustainably, use natural resources wisely, and understand the importance of healthy biodiversity. His message is that we are too far removed from nature and fail to see the many benefits of a change in behaviour, those benefits being economic, social and environmental. This is why Alan is pleased to be a member of SAVE.
